Doesn't quite capture the feeling of discovery and accomplishment that comes from putting things together. As it is, Holmes is always one step ahead of the player--which can still make for a great story, but it doesn't really let you have the experience of playing as the great Sherlock Holmes. Fun enough, and worth a playthrough, but between taking what ends up feeling like a very passive role in the story and some quirks of gameplay that end up being rather annoying--particularly in those sections of the game requiring precise timing--it's all a bit of a let down at the end.. Honestly, the graphical errors and such are things that I expected when playing an old games. There were many times where strange overlaps would occur and break the game, so I had to reopen-- even after adjusting the resolution and other display settings as seen recommended in forums. If you play this, for the love of god, save often.I should clarify I'm a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes in literature. Some of the games definitely deliver in this category. My favorite remains Crimes & Punishments, which is both intuitive in control and camera as well as plot development, but still challenging and intriguing. I've trudged through some of the older games, but this one is probably one of my least favorite.Pros: Still the pompous Sherlock you'll find in all games. However, this lacks the charm of his absolute lack of self-preservation that other games will happily highlight for you-- imo, one of his bigger charms. Banter between him and the cops is troll as always. Overlooking random visual glitches, the cutscenes aren't so bad for a 14 year old game.Cons: Navigation is a headache, a trait of old clickers, unfortunately. A map is provided for some locations, but there is no indication of your own position in it, and the whirling camera angles make it pretty hard to deduce on your own. There is a lot of being tugged around in many directions, without a lot of evidence that ever begins to lean somewhere. A lot of useless filler information. Some of the puzzles genuinely made me curse aloud. Not because of difficulty, but because of genuine absurdity. If the overwhelming portion of players for your game admit to relying on a walkthrough, the issue is with the design, not the player. Puzzles should provide some level of intuitive hint or structure. Simple actions are made complicated due to literally no explanation or reason. I spent three minutes trying to stick something in g*ddamn water because it is not expressed to you that you need to heat the water first. I would never guess I have to heat water up to put soap in it. WHY, lmao? Progression makes no sense and involves a lot of redundant pathing. You can literally be the only person navigating a location, but after finding one clue, all the sudden like 6 more objects that are very visually obvious appear, rather than having existing objects gain meaning. What? How does that make sense at all? Who is walking around dropping things while you sift through papers? Minor complaint that visuals will de-sync, and certain voice actors are 3x louder than others. All-in-all, there's definitely a better detective-style game out there.. I bought this game on Steam after recalling it from many years ago, so it was, to some extent, bought to appease my nostalgia. I remembered correctly that the game could be difficult at times. However, if you have a walkthrough at hand to give you a hand (should you find yourself having overlooked some miniscule detail), the game should be fairly easy to traverse and take about seven hours to complete. However, I think that while $10USD could usually be considered a reasonable price for 7 hours of entertainment, in the case of a game that is 14 years old, I think $5USD seems a more justifiable figure, so it's best you buy this on sale. Besides those points, the game itself is excellent. The story is very compelling (based on a novel, in fact), and if you are someone who likes to consider the details and likes some intellectual stimulus, this game has a lot of it. The characters all have.. character, with some quality voice acting (except for that one kid who is voiced by an adult..). The game has some beautiful music - though not enough of it, and you'll hear the same pieces many times. The set pieces are quite good for their time and still adequate today, however you'll find some glitching of character placement onscreen if playing on a widescreen monitor, as the game wasn't made with playing on one in mind. Also bear in mind that while this story technically has a happy ending in that everything is resolved and the evil ones are given justice, there is some gruesome backstory and there are many innocent and not-so-innocent people who get killed. It's an intellectually stimulating story; but despite that, murder remains murder, and this won't be something to help you sleep at night. There are several extremely ugly sides of human nature shown in this game. Overall, I recommend this game, but bear in mind that it can be difficult (have a walkthrough handy), visually slightly glitchy on widescreen, and actually very sad.EDIT: Having read some other reviews, I would like to clarify some points.Firstly, since I had some prior experience of the game (though never having completed it), my playtime may be less than expected. Maybe 10-15 hours is a more realistic figure. The quoted 25 hours on the story page is difficult to believe, unless you really take your time. Secondly, the puzzles in this game are logical and sufficient clues are (almost) always about somewhere. I would still recommend a walkthrough, as some details are easily overlooked (a footprint here or there, in particular, though the quizzes tended to have a question or two that I might get wrong, too), and sometimes spending too much time trying to figure out a puzzle is just a waste of time. Does having to sometimes rely on a walkthrough this mean the game was badly designed to begin with? Perhaps. Does it mean it isn't worth playing? Not really. You should still be able to complete 95% of the game by yourself. Thirdly, I found the UI perfectly usable, though I agree that movement is awfully clunky.. I enjoyed this, it was challenging, to say the least. I had to use walkthrough many times, since I just wanted to continue futher. The story was interesting, but some of the quizzes were too hard and annoying to pass.. The game started out nice enough. Point-n-click adventure game. Not the best, but enjoyable. Then I got to the part where you need to stealthely get by a guard and his dog. A stealth part in an adventure game. Now, if implemented properly, this wouldn't be that bad. Unfortunatelly that is not the case here. The rules of how they can detect you are not explained nor are they obvious. Depending on where you are, Holmes may or may not be able to go where you click. Even after checking out some walkthroughs and knowing what I was supposed to do (which didn't really make sense in the first place) I was not able to get through this stage. Quite a shame since from what I understand, that's about halfway through. Oh well.. this is simply a Sherlock Holmes themed point and click game. Like a lot of these games it has a lot of silly hard puzzles that frankly make next to no sense in context of the story or the source material. It also suffers from a lot of busy work problem solving that plague point and click adventures - to get the thing, you need to open the door with another thing thats in another place, hidden under a thing etc etc. This not to say its bad, just that it can be exhausting at times with no real sense of progress or for that matter no real sense of uncovering a mystery so much as trying to complete an obstacle course. It had one particular bad puzzle that involved running along a forest track to a timer. The game very nearly ended up in my sin bin for this alone.I can't really recommend this when there are better stories in this series, like Testament of Sherlock Holmes or Crime and Punishment.
